Birmingham Creatives Recap

Thanks to everyone who came to O’henry’s to join me and Chris in good coffee and creative conversation. I’m excited to say that our idea of creating a creative community seems to be shared across Birmingham. We ended up having around 10 people show up and another half dozen or so who were interested but couldn’t make it. That’s pretty great considering the effort Chris and I put forth in advertising the event.
So what came out of this meeting? Well, it was unanimous that Birmingham could use a group devoted to the creative side of design as opposed to the technical side. This doesn’t mean the technical side shouldn’t be excluded, just not the focus. What Birmingham needs is a group of creatives from various platforms who encourage, push, stretch and support each other. So that is what we intend to build.
So, where do we go from here? We all agreed that we had a great jumping off point and that we needed to continue to collaborate to build this group. To do so, we have a couple of ways to stay connected and informed about the group’s progression. There is now a google group that you can sign up for that will allow everyone to be able to communicate and collaborate on this effort. If you would like to become a member (making it member based to keep the spam out), then go to http://groups.google.com/group/bham-creatives and sign up. Next is our Twitter page. Chris and I will be using this as a way to keep everyone posted as to what we are up to.
The most important thing to note about this group is the fact that we are going to keep it informal. For now, we are not planning on any set meetings, there are no fees and there are no requirements. We just want to be able to lean on each other when needed. If people in the group want to go grab lunch or coffee, then we can, we just don’t want a strict schedule to follow.
As we grow, we can put together some workshops or work with other groups in our area to put on some events. Let’s just start talking and see what all the creatives in the town need.
Thanks again to everyone who came out. We are excited and foresee this thing growing fast.
